Teacher Institutes

The Intensive Teacher Institutes are the first phase of BOEP, designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge about the Colorado Plateau Bioregion, develop ways to integrate Place-based outdoor education into classrooms, and satisfy each states’ core curricula, district requirements, and national standards.

Place-based Education is defined as an interdisciplinary, hands-on, minds-on investigation of the environment and community around you. Place-based education recognizes the importance of viewing the environment within the context of human influences as well as natural processes and systems. Teachers as learners are engaged in direct experiences and are challenged to use higher order thinking skills.

BOEP3The Intensive Summer/Fall Institutes are held each June, July, and October for 5 days, based out of the FCS Basecamp near Monticello, Utah. We explore the area around the basecamp with field trips to Cedar Mesa and the Abajo Mountains. The activities are designed to allow teachers to learn about the Colorado Plateau while participating in Place-based lessons, mentoring skills, and outdoor classroom management skills they can take back to use with their classes. All teachers receive a large 3 – ring binder filled with ready to use lesson plans and additional support information.
