2010 Crew Schedules and Crew Descriptions

work1The spring and fall 8-week crews, the 6-month SFT Crew, and the 10-week DRRC work 40 hours per week. The summer 4-week crews work 32 hours per week, as they are required to do at least 10 hours of education per week. Youth work under the supervision of two professional staff, and learn skills including; use of tools, specific project skills, employment expectations, field techniques, resource protection, environmental education, outdoor living/cooking/menu planning, and about careers in natural resource management and recreation. Youth earn a wage and receive high school or college credits for a minimum of 10 hours/week of education. Eligible crewmembers (17 years or older) can earn AmeriCorps Education Awards. Tents, sleeping bags, food, tools, and safety gear are provided. Former Canyon Country Youth Corps crewmembers can be hired as Leaders-in-Training (one per crew) to help foster leadership skills/create future crew leaders.

 

Spring 10-Week Dolores River Restoration Crew

Crew Leader/Mentor Training: February 25 - March 6
Crewmember Start Day: Sunday, March 7
Training Weeks (including river trip & chainsaw training): March 8 - 20
Orientation River Trip: March 8 - 10
Crew Duration: March 7 – May 15

Crew Description: Spend the season working and camping in some of the Southwest's premier natural areas while contributing to its natural heritage. As part of the Dolores River Restoration Crew you will gain valuable field experience while working on projects that are critical in the fight against invasive plant species. Benefits include extensive training (chainsaw use (S-212), CPR/First Aid, Disaster Preparedness), a bi-weekly living stipend, a 300hr AmeriCorps education award, and the chance to work and in hand with land management agencies. Crew Leader/Mentor and Crewmember positions are available for this 10-week crew. The CCYC Dolores River Restoration Crew members will have the opportunity to work mostly in Southeast Utah and Southwest Colorado in the highest concentration of National Parks in the nation. This crew will camp out during each hitch near each work site. Transportation is provided while on hitch. This crew will also go on a 3-day orientation river trip on the San Juan River to learn more about invasive species and removal procedures.

 

Spring 10-Week Crew

Crew Leader/Mentor Training: February 25 - March 6
Crewmember Start Day: Sunday, March 7
Orientation River Trip: March 8 - 10
Crew Duration: March 7 – May 21

Crew Description: This crew will work on a variety of projects including technical rock trail work, fence work and various other types of habitat restoration projects on National Park Service Lands, Bureau of Land Management Lands, National Forest Service Lands and other public or private lands. This crew will camp out during each hitch near each work site. All food and transportation is provided. This crew will also go on a 3-day orientation river trip on the San Juan River. Crewmembers who complete this program will earn an AmeriCorps Education Award to go towards continuing education along with a bi-weekly living stipend.

Mountain Alliance of Conservation Corps Sustainable Forestry Team

Crew Leader/Mentor Training: May 14 - 29
Crewmember Start Day:  Sunday, May 30
All Crew Training: May 31 – June 5
San Juan River Trip: June 9 -11
Crew Duration: May 30 - November 20 (6 months)

Crew Description: Spend the season working and camping in some of the Southwest's premier natural areas while contributing to its natural heritage. As part of the Sustainable Forestry Team you will gain valuable field experience while working on projects for a variety of local, state and federal agencies. Benefits include extensive training (chainsaw use (S-212), wildland firefighting training (S-130/190), CPR/First Aid, Disaster Preparedness), a bi-weekly living stipend, a 900hr AmeriCorps education award, and the chance to work in a variety of settings throughout the southwest. Crew Leader/Mentor and Crewmember positions are available for 6 months. The CCYC Sustainable Forestry Team members will have the opportunity to work mostly in Southeast Utah but will have the opportunity to train and work in up to 5 states during the course of the program. This crew will camp out during each hitch near each work site. All food and transportation is provided. This crew will also go on a 3-day orientation river trip on the San Juan River after the cahinsaw training.

Summer 4-Week Crews

Crew Leader/Mentor Training: May 14 - 29

4-week Crew Session 1:  
Crewmember Start Day: Tuesday, June 1
Orientation River Trip: June 2 - 4
Crew Duration: June 1 – July 3

4-week Crew Session 2:  
Crewmember Start Day: Wednesday, July 14
Orientation River Trip: July 15 - 17
Crew Duration: July 14 - August 14

The two 4-week crews are out in the field their entire 4-week session.

Crew Description: Each 4-Week Crew will work on a variety of projects including trail work, fence work and various other types of habitat restoration projects on National Forest Service Lands, Bureau of Land Management Lands and other public lands. Along with the work component is an integral educational component where the crewmembers will learn more about the various aspects of the Colorado Plateau. Each 4-Week Crew will start with an orientation 3-day orientation river trip on the San Juan River. These crews will camp out during each hitch near each work site. All food and transportation is provided. All crewmembers will be paid their stipend at the end of each 4-week crew.

 

Community Crew: 4 Weeks

Crewmember Start Day: Saturday, June 26 (4 hrs @ office)
Crew Duration: June 28 – July 23
Final River Trip: Monday, July 26

The CCYC Community Crew is for Monticello and Blanding Utah residents only. The Community Crew will focus on community service projects in the area. This is a great opportunity for local youth to gain employment and job skills. The crew will meet at a predetermined pickup spot every morning and work an 6.5-hour day, Monday through Friday.
