The Southwestern U.S., with its awesome natural beauty and redrocks, is truly a gem. The untrammeled wilderness, utter quietness, and long distance views envelope you as you sit atop a canyon rim waiting for the sunrise.
Southwest Safari Camps is an exciting new opportunity for you to explore and learn about parts of three unique areas in the Southwest that few ever see---spring in “The Other Chaco Canyon”, summer in “The Other Canyonlands”, and fall in “The Other Mesa Verde”---while being pampered in a deluxe safari-style camp. We’ll set up your tent for you. All you need to bring is your curiosity!
Each tent is large enough to stand in and accomodates two double airbeds, linens, pillows, lanterns, chairs, and a bedside table. Showers will be available daily as well as clean lavatories, a large dining tent, day packs, hiking poles, and other amenities for your comfort.
Join us to hike to off-the-beaten-path ruins, canyons, and vistas with people who love to share them. Our camps will be located in out-of-the way places, with excellent guides and an archaeologist. Learn through hands-on education, exploration, and discovery of places most people don’t know exist, with evening programs by our resident archaeologist or guest lecturers. One special week in each location you will learn about Archaeoastronomy, the study of the techniques developed by different prehistoric cultures to determine and display significant dates such as summer or winter solstices and equinoxes.
Southwest Safari Camps affords the luxury of sharing the wilderness with a small group that will soon become dear friends. Rustic, but charming, camp accommodations are intentionally simple, yet extremely comfortable, and the service is first class. During the day stretch your legs and hike 1 - 7 miles (all hikes are optional) to see archaeological sites few ever see. In the evening, after a delicious meal prepared by our camp chef and served in the dining tent, retire to the campfire to share stories and marvel at the billions of stars overhead. Fall asleep to the sounds of the night –frogs, crickets, or an owl hoot. Wrap up these ultimate safaris in Durango, Colorado, full of Native American trading posts, and you've got all the best of the Southwest rolled into one trip!
