We've rated our programs according to the scale below, so you can pick the trips that match your abilities and interests. Please realize that difficulty scales are subjective, and are only a guide. We'll be happy to help you choose. Just call 800-525-4456. Physical requirements vary from program to program, and may be subject to variables.
A trip with daily physical exertion, such as backpacking, is more difficult overall than one without regular exertion, such as van touring with some hiking. Weather, such as extreme heat or cold, also makes travel more difficult, and can only be estimated, based on the time of year (see Weather). Route selection, made at the discretion of the trip leader, also impacts difficulty. All trips take place above 4000 feet elevation. All participants will benefit from pre-trip conditioning, especially those coming from lower elevations.
"Easy." Walking or hiking without loads, or with light day-packs, for distances of less than 3 miles per day, roundtrip.
"Moderate." Hiking with day-packs from 3-8 miles per day roundtrip, or backpacking with full backpacks up to 5 miles per day, roundtrip.
"Strenuous." Hiking with day-packs over difficult terrain from 3-8 miles per day or backpacking with heavy backpacks for multiple days of 5-10 miles per day, roundtrip. Desert hiking tends to be more challenging than other terrain, due to higher temperatures and aridity.
River programs are ranked according to the rapids scale below.
Class I-II. Easy flatwater, some swift currents and mild waves.
Class III. Larger waves, strong current and narrow channels due to gravel bars or rocks.
Class IV-V. Difficult to navigate, with narrow channels obstructed by rocks; steep and narrow drops; possibility of overturning the boat.
You may experience variable weather on your trip. Much of the time, sunny, clear conditions prevail, but storms can bring strong winds, soaking rains, and unseasonable snows. Spring and Fall temperatures may range from 30 F to 90 F. Summer temperatures may reach 110. Winter temperatures may fall to 25 below zero.
Please note: Participants will be asked to help with group-related efforts (i.e. carry some group gear on backpacks, have river bags and luggage ready for loading, etc.). Four Corners School reserves the right to refuse participation in any trip based on our assessment of a participant's abilities.
